Former Colombian President Ivan Duque is calling on the United States to take a more proactive role in Latin America, especially in tackling the root causes of insecurity and instability in the region. Mr. Duque recently said in an interview that the US has a moral responsibility to help stabilize the developing countries of Latin America, and to cultivate stronger partnerships with foreign governments in order to promote economic growth. He noted that the US can play a special role in boosting critical investments in infrastructure and education, promoting good governance, and working to reduce drug trafficking and organized crime. Mr. Duque also suggested that the US provide leadership in international organizations such as the Organization of American States (OAS) to help build bridges of trust among the region’s nations.
