The oversight committee of the South Bend City Council has called out Mayor Pete Buttigieg for a “disturbing pattern of safety and security failures” during recent trips he has taken as part of his presidential campaign.
In a Thursday night meeting, the committee criticized Buttigieg for failing to take appropriate security precautions when traveling within and outside of Indiana.
The committee highlighted a 2018 trip to the Middle East where Buttigieg traveled without informing the South Bend police and security departments, as well as a trip to a crowded festival in South Carolina this past June.
The committee expressed concern about Buttigieg’s “failure to ensure his own safety and security when traveling away from South Bend.” They added that the recent travel-related missteps represent a “disturbing pattern” that could have been addressed with proper security protocols, including informing South Bend security officials before leaving.
The committee recommended that Buttigieg take appropriate steps to make sure that he and any accompanying family or staff are properly guarded when traveling outside the city.
