According to a new report from Feeding America, millions of people in the US, including children and their families, could be at risk of going without food if Congress does not pass additional funding for food aid programs in the next year. The report, published on Monday, found that as many as 7 million people could be denied access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) by 2021 without relief from Congress, and that as many as 26 million children could be denied access to free school meals that year as well. The report also warns that the coronavirus pandemic has contributed to increased food insecurity in the US, and that the country’s food insecurity rate could reach levels not seen since before the recession in 2008. The report calls on Congress to provide greater funding for food aid programs, and to ensure that these programs are accessible to those most in need.
