Mike Johnson, the House speaker in Louisiana, recently bucked the trend among modern speakers of acquiring high-dollar assets. Johnson, who is married and has five children, only owns a home and a pickup truck. He was criticized by opponents for his frugal spending habits, but Johnson is proud to represent “the everyday person on the street” and credits his parents for instilling in him the value of thrift. Johnson also said that he was “raised to believe that you earn your way in life and that you don’t owe anyone anything other than the sweat of your brow and your honest work.” Johnson wants to lead by example to show that you can be successful in public office without getting rich along the way.
