House Dem Leader Jeffries floats end-run around McCarthy to avert government shutdown

by

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries is reportedly floating a potential end-run around Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy in order to avoid a government shutdown before the end of the current fiscal year. Jeffries is reportedly considering having the Democratic-controlled House pass a short-term funding bill while bypassing McCarthy’s involvement. Jeffries’ proposed plan would require Democratic Representatives from both the moderate Blue Dog Caucus and progressive Congressional Progressive Caucus to coalesce around a common bill that would fund the government until the end of the year. In order to become law, the bill would need to be passed by the Senate and signed by President Trump. If successful, the measure would not only avoid a government shutdown, but put pressure on McCarthy and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to come to the table and negotiate with Democrats in good faith.
