Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell urged tighter border security in President Joe Biden’s $6 trillion budget request and reaffirmed his support for Israel and Ukraine.
In a speech on the Senate floor, McConnell said Biden must ensure that U.S. borders are secure and well defended before advancing any other domestic priorities. He also said it’s important for Biden to provide assistance for Israel and Ukraine, two democratic allies in a turbulent region.
“It is important to put our own fiscal house together, but it is just as important to ensure our nation is doing everything it can to defend our hard-fought gains for democracy and human rights around the world,” McConnell said.
McConnell has been an ardent supporter of Israel and a consistent critic of Russia’s aggression against the former Soviet republic of Ukraine. In addition, he has called for an end to illegal immigration in the U.S., including illegal border crossings.
“Any budget request should include responsible steps to secure our borders, strengthen our military, and support our key allies like Israel and Ukraine,” he said.
