Israeli military officials are predicting that the United States would get involved if Iran and Hezbollah join in a widening conflict between Israel and Hamas.
“The situation could rapidly escalate if Iran and Hezbollah join in on the fighting with Hamas,” Israeli military chief of staff Gadi Eizenkot told Public Radio International.
While Eizenkot could not specify what kind of involvement the US might have if the current crisis were to deepen, he indicated the possibility of a US role.
“The danger is that we may find ourselves in a situation of a wider war which could lead to an involvement of the United States,” Eizenkot said.
Eizenkot acknowledged that the potential involvement of the US could be seen as a positive, given the stronger stance taken by the Trump Administration on Iran and its proxies. However, he cautioned that involving the US could cause a larger conflict and unpredictable consequences.
