Tom Emmer is a Republican Congressman serving Minnesota’s 6th Congressional District since 2015. As a member of the Republican caucus, Emmer has held a number of leadership roles, most recently as the House GOP Majority Whip for the 116th Congress. He has a strong conservative background, and is a vocal supporter of Second Amendment rights.
Emmer unsuccessfully ran for the GOP nomination for Governor of Minnesota in 2010 and 2014. In 2018, Emmer was endorsed by current House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy when he announced his candidacy for House Speaker. During his campaign for the top house leadership position, Emmer was known as a unity candidate and a champion for conservatism. Since then, he has been an effective leader in the House and helped advance a number of Republican agenda items.
Emmer has also been active in the Minnesota business and political community since the mid-1990s. He has served on the board of directors for the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and on the board of trustees for the Minnesota Free Market Institute. Emmer is also a member of the Tea Party Caucus and the Freedom Caucus.
As House Majority Whip, Emmer has worked to ensure that the agenda of House Republicans is being put forward. He has become known as a go-getter and an advocate for small government and fiscal responsibility.
