House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is floating the idea of a meeting between himself and President Joe Biden to try and find a way to resolve the ongoing government shutdown, as well as the impasse over funding for the border wall.
McCarthy’s suggestion marks a rare move by Republicans to reach out to the White House in the midst of a partisan battle. It is unclear whether Biden would accept the offer, but the President has said he is open to negotiations.
In a tweet on Thursday, McCarthy expressed his desire for an “open dialogue” to end the current crisis, which is now in its fourth week. He added that he was “willing to meet with the President to find reasonable solutions on border security and ending the government shutdown.”
It remains to be seen whether McCarthy’s offer will yield any results, but it serves as an indication that both parties are looking for a way out of the current impasse.
