Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi faces a tricky “triangle of troubles,” which includes navigating partisan divides between both legislative chambers and divisions within her own party. On one hand, the Democratic majority in the House is desperately fighting for legislation to address the pandemic and other pressing issues. On the other hand, some progressive members of the Democratic Party are pushing for more ambitious policies than the moderated ones Pelosi has recommended. Meanwhile, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has so far refused to budge on any of the Democratic bills that have been passed by the House. As the Speaker, Pelosi must balance the pressing needs of both sides of the aisle while ensuring legislation can be passed in both chambers. It’s a delicate and difficult situation, but Pelosi has effectively leveraged her position in the past, and will hopefully do so again.
