New York Democratic Rep. Higgins will leave Congress in February

by

It was reported in January 2021 that Representative Brian Higgins, a New York Democrat, will be leaving Congress in February 2021.

The timing of his departure was triggered by Governor Andrew Cuomo’s call for a special election on April 28, 2021 to fill the seat vacated by Congressman Chris Jacobs.

Higgins, who has been in the House of Representatives since 2005, had decided not to run for re-election earlier in 2020.

He says his choice to leave Congress was purely voluntary, and he made the decision to not run for reelection and involve himself in other pursuits.

Higgins has chaired the House Select Committee on the Coronavirus Crisis, which has held hearings focusing on vaccination distribution and economic relief during the pandemic.
