Laphonza Butler is the president of SEIU California and SEIU ULTCW, the Service Employees International Union, United Long Term Care Workers. She is an American labor leader and social justice activist, and a leading voice in the fight for higher wages and labor rights. As president of SEIU California, Butler has helped champion progressive causes in California, including raising the minimum wage, improving access to quality childcare and healthcare services, and protecting the rights of immigrants and workers of color. She has been a vocal advocate for increasing the minimum wage, ensuring workers have access to paid sick days, expanding access to retirement savings plans, and increasing workplace safety. Governor Gavin Newsom announced on April 8, 2021, that he had selected Butler to fill the vacancy created by Dianne Feinstein’s retirement from the US Senate.
