Ronald Reagan’s legacy is still largely embraced and celebrated by Republican candidates and politicians. However, Reagan’s values and policies would not necessarily align with the current GOP’s political tactics and philosophies under President Donald Trump. Reagan was a staunch believer in limited government, free market capitalism, and a strong national defense, which he believed allowed for the promotion of personal freedom. Trump, on the other hand, has shown a much more pro-China and protectionist stance on global trade, has advanced a large government infrastructure package, and has been highly critical of US foreign adventures, particularly in the Middle East.
Republican candidates embrace Reagan. But he’d be out of step in Trump’s GOP.
