On Thursday, Republican leadership in the U.S. Senate postponed a procedural vote on a stopgap measure intended to avert a government shutdown, after Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) objected to the plan, citing its huge spending level.
The Republican-backed measure would have provided temporary funding for the government for nearly two months, and offered $5 billion for President Donald Trump’s proposed border wall.
However, Senator Paul objected, saying he could not support the massive spending bill, and argued for a more responsible approach to the budget.
At this point, it is not clear when the procedural vote might take place, or when there might be a resolution to avert a potential government shutdown.
