FBI Identifies North Korean Lazarus Group as Culprit Behind $41 Million Stake Casino Hack

by

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has identified North Korea’s Lazarus Group as the responsible party behind a $41 million cyber-attack on a South Korean Bitcoin casino stake (Stake.com).

The attack took place in April 2019 and saw the theft of millions of US dollars in digital currency. The malicious attack was believed to be orchestrated by North Korea’s Lazarus Group, a state-sponsored hacking group associated with the government.

The group is believed to have infiltrated the casino’s systems and access server assets, allowing it to siphon off funds at will. The attack caused the casino to lose a reported $41 million in funds.

The FBI has stated that the Lazarus Group utilised a mix of phishing, malware, and other advanced techniques in order to gain access to the casino’s sensitive databases.

Lazarus Group has been linked with the North Korean government in the past, and is believed to be responsible for a range of cyberattacks on banks around the world over the years. However, this is the first time the group has been linked with a direct attack on a casino.
