On April 15, 2021, the U.S. Senate confirmed former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley to be the new commissioner of the Social Security Administration. O’Malley was nominated by President Joe Biden in March, and he was approved by the Senate in an 80-17 vote.
O’Malley is a Democrat and formerly served as the governor of Maryland from 2007-2015. He was also previously the mayor of Baltimore from 1999 to 2007. O’Malley has also worked as a lawyer and was chairman of Maryland’s Democratic party.
As head of the Social Security Administration, O’Malley will be responsible for administering the Social Security program and will also be charged with ensuring its proper management. The SSA is an important economic force in American society, providing benefits to more than 62 million people. O’Malley will also oversee providing disability benefits and making decisions related to the retirement of millions of people.
