Voter turnout has typically been quite low in many countries around the world, and it is expected to continue. In the United States, for instance, voter turnout has been declining since 1966, with only around 55% of eligible voters participating in the 2020 presidential election. While this has been a growing trend, nonvoters are having an increasingly significant impact on the political landscape. From protests to collective action and social media campaigns, nonvoters are becoming increasingly involved in the political process, demonstrating their willingness to participate even if they don’t vote. As a result, the politics and policies of the next few years will be highly fashioned by those who don’t participate in elections just as much as those who do.
