United Airlines tweaks frequent flyer program to reward credit card spending

by

United Airlines has announced changes to its MileagePlus program that will reward customers who spend money on the airline’s branded credit card.

Starting in 2021 customers will receive 1.5 times the usual miles earned for every dollar spent on United’s co-branded credit cards.

The changes also give frequent flyers the opportunity to earn bonus miles through a new “premium tier” program. Customers who spend at least $25,000 over the course of a year can earn up to 2,000 bonus miles.

In addition, United has also updated their award chart, making it easier for customers to redeem rewards faster. Short-haul flights will now require fewer miles than before, especially on domestic flights.

The changes are the latest in United’s efforts to increase customer loyalty and engagement with its MileagePlus program. The airline hopes the updates will entice customers to sign up for the credit cards and earn more miles.
