Senate Republicans expressed outrage and shock after President Donald Trump announced a freeze in military pay and retirement benefits in order to help pay for the border wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Senator Doug Jones (D-AL.) was among those who voiced anger over the plan. “It’s wrong, it’s unconscionable, and it’s an insult to the men and women who serve our country in the military and their families,” Jones said. He was joined by Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL.) who called the plan a “punch in the gut” and Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski (AK.), Thom Tillis (N.C.), and Pat Toomey (Pa.) all spoke out against the decision.
