Jewish Florida lawmaker breaks from DeSantis and endorses Trump

Republican Rep. Michael Waltz of Florida’s 6th Congressional District broke with the state’s governor, Ron DeSantis, to endorse President Donald Trump for reelection on Monday, Sept. 28th.

“I am proud to officially endorse DonaldJTrump for President,” Waltz tweeted Monday. “America needs his leadership now more than ever before. He has stood by our community in Florida and supports our men and women in uniform around the world.”

Waltz, who is Jewish, ran for office in 2018 and is serving his first term in Congress. He represents an area of central Florida stretching from New Smyrna Beach to Jacksonville.

Waltz is the latest Florida lawmaker to affirm their support for the president, following a number of other Republicans, such as Rep. Matt Gaetz and Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart.

DeSantis, who is considered a strong Trump ally, has not officially endorsed him yet. But, according to the Miami Herald, the governor has said that he will support him and excoriated Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden as “an utter disaster.”

The endorsement from Waltz comes as Trump seeks to shore up support in the crucial swing state of Florida and also just one day before the first presidential debate. It remains to be seen how Waltz’s endorsement will affect Trump’s chances in Florida, but it is clear that he appreciates the support.
