According to Politico, Coca-Cola recently had to backtrack after Senator Ted Cruz called out the company for deleting language supporting the Black Lives Matter movement from its social media pages. This prompted an intense backlash from many activists on the internet. It is believed that Coca-Cola chose to quietly delete the language in an attempt to avoid the negative publicity that could have come from Cruz’s accusations and other activists pointing out their initial support. This is not the first time Coca-Cola has been caught in a PR crisis due to its stance on a political or social issue. Other instances include the company’s decision to stop recycling PET beverage containers in 2017 (causing a recycling crisis) and its decision to launch a limited edition Black Lives Matter campaign.
