Kamala Harris has declared she is ready and willing to step into the role of president should her running mate, Joe Biden, become incapacitated.
Speaking on ABC’s This Week on Sunday, the Democratic vice presidential nominee, who made history when she became the first Black and South Asian woman to occupy the post, was asked whether she’s prepared to become president should Biden become unwell in office.
“Yes, I am,” Harris responded. “I have a great deal of confidence in the American people that their vote will be for Joe Biden as the president of the United States, the next president of the United States, but if something were to happen, God forbid, I am prepared to do what I have to do in that circumstance.”
When pressed by host George Stephanopoulos about what that meant, Harris said she had to “be prepared to step in”.
“That’s the obligation that I have happily taken on and I’m prepared for it,” she said. “If something were to happen, may have to take over.”
