Shuwanza Goff has some big shoes to fill as President Joe Biden’s new congressional liaison. Biden appointed Goff to the role this month after Emily Molfino left to become the White House legislative director.
Goff faces a daunting task in the coming weeks. Congress must pass a spending bill by Friday, Dec. 11th to keep the federal government funded and avert another government shutdown. Goff’s role will be to help Biden and his team navigate through the political and legislative challenges of the spending fight.
Goff will be responsible for establishing relationships with members of Congress and their aides, as well as strategize how best to get Biden’s agenda and priorities across Capitol Hill. She will also work to establish strong working partnerships with congressional leadership and committee chairs in both chambers to ensure that Biden’s legislative agenda moves through Congress smoothly and efficiently.
Additionally, Goff will be responsible for monitoring congressional action on sweeping bills, like the president’s proposed infrastructure package, and provide the White House on-the-ground information about what lawmakers are thinking and feeling.
Goff comes to the White House with a wealth of experience. She most recently served as the legislative director for Rep. Alma Adams of North Carolina. Before that, Goff worked as an analyst and scheduler for the Senate Budget Committee. Her appointment shows Biden’s commitment to having diverse representation on his staff and a trusted voice on Capitol Hill. With the shutdown looming, the pressure is on Goff to help Biden find a way through the spending impasse in Congress.
