Trump fights Jack Smith request for narrow gag order in Jan. 6 case

by

President Trump is pushing back against a request from Jack Smith, one of the defendants in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack case, for a narrow gag order that would prevent the media from broadcasting only his comments in the courtroom. Trump’s lawyers oppose the request on the grounds that it would be unconstitutional and would set a dangerous precedent, as it would limit freedom of speech and the press. Additionally, they argue that Smith’s request is “vague and overbroad” and that allowing such a request would create a “massive chilling effect” on free speech. They have urged the judge to deny the request, arguing that the only way to fairly and effectively monitor trial proceedings is by broadcasting the entire proceedings.
