Wendy’s brings back popular burger

by

Have you ever had a fast-food item so good that you kept thinking about it years after it disappeared? It has happened to most of us at some point.

This time, many Wendy’s Company (WEN) fans have found themselves in exactly that situation. And now, the company is finally responding.

Founded in 1969, Wendy’s has grown into one of the world’s largest burger chains, known for its square patties, Frosty desserts, and menu that blends consistency with innovation. At the moment, Wendy’s is the world’s third-largest hamburger fast-food chain, following McDonald’s and Burger King.

But like many fast-food giants, it often rotates items in and out, leaving loyal customers hoping their favorites will return one day.

This time, that wish is coming true.

After years of requests and a wave of nostalgia across social media, Wendy’s is bringing back one of its most talked-about burgers.

And the reaction? Let’s just say fans aren’t staying quiet.

Wendy’s brings back Pretzel Bacon Pub Burger after fan demand

Wendy’s has officially confirmed the return of its Pretzel Bacon Pub Burger, a fan favorite that hasn’t been on menus since 2022.

The comeback wasn’t random. The company launched a “Bring it Back Bracket” on social media, letting customers vote on which discontinued item deserved another shot. After competing against several nostalgic menu items, the Pretzel Bacon Pub Burger came out on top.

And it’s easy to see why. The burger features a quarter-pound beef patty topped with Muenster cheese, applewood-smoked bacon, crispy fried onions, pickles, and a rich beer cheese sauce, all served on a soft pretzel bun.

It’s bold, indulgent, and very different from the standard fast-food offering.

Fans have been vocal about wanting it back. According to a post Wendy’s shared on Instagram, some called it “one of the best fast food burgers” they’ve ever had, while others admitted they’ve been “dreaming” about it since it disappeared. When Wendy’s teased its return, social media quickly filled with excitement.

The only catch? The company says it’s “coming soon,” but hasn’t confirmed an exact release date or how long it will stay on the menu.

Wendy’s is also rebuilding after a tough sales period

The timing of this comeback is strategic. Wendy’s is currently in the middle of a major turnaround effort after a challenging stretch. Wendy’s reported an 11.3% drop in U.S. same-restaurant sales in the fourth quarter of 2025, highlighting declining customer traffic.

To address this, Wendy’s is closing between 5% and 6% of its U.S. locations, roughly 300 restaurants, in early 2026, as reported by Yahoo Finance. The move is part of a broader turnaround effort called “Project Fresh.”

This project targets older, underperforming locations that no longer meet modern standards. The strategy aims to streamline operations, focus on stronger-performing stores, and boost overall profitability.

“Execution is underway, and we are confident that Project Fresh will position Wendy’s as the industry leader, one that guests love, franchisees are proud to operate, teams are excited to be a part of, and creates significant value for our shareholders,” Cook said in a company statement.

Wendy’s also calls 2026 a rebuilding year

Cook described 2026 as a “rebuilding year,” with a strategy centered on streamlining operations and reconnecting with customers. That includes shifting away from an overreliance on limited-time offers and focusing more on everyday value.

“While results were in line with our expectations, we know that we have a lot of work to do to improve performance,” Cook said during Wendy’s Q4 earnings call.

More Restaurants

  • McDonald’s latest menu missteps could have a major domino effect
  • 76-year-old comfort food chain closes most of its restaurants
  • Fast food giant is coming for Starbucks with fan-approved launch

At the same time, in January, Wendy’s introduced its “Biggie Deals” menu, offering tiered pricing options at $4, $6, and $8 aimed at budget-conscious customers. Wendy’s is also planning to introduce a new chicken sandwich soon.

So, where does the Pretzel Bacon Pub Burger fit into all of this? It’s part of a broader effort to bring customers back with value and items they genuinely love.

Wendy’s saw challenging Q4 2025 in terms of same-restaurant sales

Wendy’s faced a challenging fourth quarter in 2025, as it reported on Feb. 13, 2026. Declining U.S. same-restaurant sales weighed on overall performance.

Global systemwide sales fell, but international growth and new restaurant openings helped offset some of the pressure, while the company continued returning capital to shareholders.

Key Wendy’s performance data

  • Q4 global systemwide sales: $3.4 billion (down 8.3%)
  • Full-year sales: $14.0 billion (down 3.5%)
  • Q4 net income: $26.5 million
  • Full-year net income: $165.1 million
  • Q4 adjusted EBITDA: $113.3 million
  • Full-year adjusted EBITDA: $522.4 million
  • Q4 EPS: $0.14 (adjusted: $0.16)
  • Full-year EPS: $0.85 (adjusted: $0.88)

Operational highlights

  • International sales growth: +6.2% (Q4), +8.1% (full year)
  • New restaurants: 34 added in Q4; 157 net new in 2025 (+2.2%)
  • U.S. same-store sales: declined 11.3%

Capital returns and strategy

  • Shareholder returns: $329.6 million (dividends + buybacks)
  • Quarterly dividend: $0.14 per share (paid March 16, 2026)
  • Buyback capacity remaining: ~$35 million (through Feb 2027)

The company is now betting that a mix of menu innovation, value offerings, and operational changes can stabilize performance in 2026. And that brings us back to the burger.

Wendy’s decision to bring back the Pretzel Bacon Pub Burger is a strategic play at a time when the company needs to reconnect with customers and rebuild momentum.

Let’s see what happens next. It’s fair to expect that bringing back a fan favorite draws attention, but lasting momentum will depend on whether it truly satisfies what customers want today.

At least Wendy’s is listening, and that simple shift is sometimes the only thing fans want.
